Cherry Street Pier by Groundswell Design Group is an entry in the Adaptive Reuse Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

Cherry Street Pier is an adaptive reuse project along the Delaware River that transformed an underutilized shipping and transportation hub into a world-class waterfront amenity for Philadelphia and the surrounding region.

The design pulls inspiration not only from the pier’s industrial architecture, but also from Philadelphia’s historic and current role as a city of makers. Programmatically, the Pier is a multifaceted venue that serves as an artist and maker incubator, a gathering space for markets and events, and a public river garden.

The 55,000 SF building hosts three main spaces: The Garage, The Platform and The Garden.

“The Garage” consists of stacked shipping containers repurposed to house 14 artist-in-residency studios, conference rooms and community workspace. These pods form a unique incubator program that provides cost-efficient workspace and showcases the talents of local artisans, makers and entrepreneurs.

“The Platform” is a flexible programmatic space. A rotating schedule of markets, art installations, lectures and community initiatives activate the space. The roof was pulled back to create

“The Garden,” an open-air gathering space with lush planters, food and beverage vendors within refurbished trolley cars, and expansive river views. The design builds upon community-driven initiatives and a legacy of programming up and down the Delaware, becoming an anchor, four-season indoor-outdoor park.

Cherry Street Pier is a unique space in the city that celebrates Philadelphia’s past while drawing it into a creative and community-connected future.
