David Chipperfield Architects wins urban planning competition in Berlin over former industrial site

Following an urban planning competition, the design for the Georg-Knorr-Park quarter in Berlin by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin with Wirtz International Landscape Architects was chosen from three competing schemes by an expert jury

by Andrew McCorkell 30 June 2020 Future Projects

Georg-Knorr-Park, a former industrial and production site in Berlin’s Marzahn district, is to be transformed into a lively residential and commercial neighbourhood.

We architects have been discussing together with clients and politicians the urgency of affordable housing for years here in Berlin.

I am therefore very pleased that with the concept for the Georg-Knorr-Park we are able to make a 250,000 square metre contribution to this very important social building task.

Christoph Felger, partner and design director at David Chipperfield Architects Berlin

The nine-hectare site is characterised by an ensemble of heritage buildings surrounded by urban infrastructure and commercial industry.

The conversion of Georg-Knorr-Park is a great opportunity to build a significant new residential quarter in Berlin’s Marzahn district providing not only affordable apartments of high quality but also an environment of well-planned open spaces and a sense of community.

David Chipperfield

The site will encompass 152,000 sq m, including 1,400 affordable rental apartments and 90,000 sq m of office and commercial space.
