Gearing by BORD Architectural Studio is an entry in the Education Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

The conceptual circle shape of the International School of Debrecen symbolizes protection, unity and community. The different functions appear like connected gears arranged on an arc. The interconnected cogs are shifted horizontally and vertically from each other, so natural light can flow though the interiors. This way light comes from all around us, creating a sense of freedom in the inner aisle ways.

The fragmentation of space creates a variety of community areas between classrooms that are open towards the interior and the garden alike. Because of the balanced proportion of light, the harsh boundary of inside and outside is blurred that makes an elevating impact on the people using the spaces.

This experience and the constant presence of nature help students in creative thinking and manifesting their ideas.

The International School of Debrecen is an international IB school which can take up to 500 students with the net area of 7,400 sq m. The school focuses on the students and experience-based education. The building was completed over the summer of 2019 and it has opened its doors to the first students in September 2019.

We are convinced that smart designed energy gained straight and gently from nature is the highest efficiency mechanical equipment. In order to minimalize environmental effect, among other solutions we used natural ventilation system, took advantage of geothermal heat in the gym by sinking it 5m underground and collected rainwater.
