An architecture of relevance in an academic context emerges in response to, and in support of, the variety of ways in which students and faculty learn from and engage with each other and with their environment. The design for the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is a manifestation of this ideology. As a physical manifestation of the interdisciplinary nature of 21st century education, the 9,840 sq m BCIT HSC, is a four-storey consolidation of 29 health science programs under one roof.

Faculty-programmed learning environments are knit together by an expansive and expressive student commons which encircles and ascends the facility, resulting in a cacophony of engagement spaces, filled with direct light and capturing views of the surrounding campus. At grade and at every floor, students will step outside onto generous vegetated terraces orienting and connecting students, faculty, and guests to and from adjacent paths and streets which form the main campus circulation spine.

The building is an architectural enhancement of the national and international presence and significance of Health Sciences education at BCIT and is a symbol of the interdisciplinary nature of modern healthcare practice.
