A new research and development building, the Zurich Innovation Center, has been created for the Givaudan SA global group in an industrial area that was developed over a long period of time as the former Maggi plant. Naturally, innovative approaches were called for in the prestigious competition procedures. As part of an ensemble the ZIC research and laboratory building had to blend in with the historical background.

The new construction applies the characteristic rules for land use of the area, follows the dynamic topographical lines and integrates the space-structuring geometry of the area‘s inner axis.

The project‘s key feature is the atrium. On the one hand, this links both parts of the new building with existing structures and, on the other, it provides functional and visual unity for all floors. The natural zenithal skylighting in the spatial continuum lies at the heart of the whole structure and enhances its clear, uniquely recognizable identity.

A number of different departments and functional units are housed in the ZIC structure which has been tailored to meet their specific requirements. To promote spontaneous exchange between researchers, meeting areas for laboratories and office spaces have also been planned to focus around the central atrium.

The regular, space-defining supporting structure enhances interior quality and offers great flexibility of use. The largely column-free, various-sized office and laboratory facilities are accessible laterally by generously sized staircases. Intermediate areas can be freely adapted to future developments without time-consuming interventions.
