A Ms7.0 earthquake struck Jiuzhaigou National Scenic Spot of Sichuan Province, South Western China on August 8, 2017. Most of the local tourist facilities were severely destroyed during the quake.

The new-built project of Jiuzhai Visitor Service Facilities is located at the entrance of Jiuzhaigou Valley National Park, within the Jiuzhaigou World Heritage Site. It consists of a series of constructions, including the Visitor Service Centre, the International Communication Centre, the Lingka (‘garden’), etc.; amounting to a gross floor area of approximately 30,000 square metres and a total land area of 8.996 hectares.

The design aims for creating a dynamic building complex of the future, meanwhile which is deeply rooting in the indigenous culture. Integration of landform architecture is taken into consideration in the design process, to weaken the building volume and minimize the environmental impact, while maximizing open space for tourists. The original traffic congestion at the entrance before the earthquake is addressed by the vertical two-layer roundabout, which allows transfers to take place on two different floors at the same time and thus greatly reduce congestion. With a new expression of traditional materials and technologies, its cultural traits are highlighted in details and regional features are embodied in the whole design.

Numerous efforts were made on the green architecture achievement. This project met the requirements of both the Chinese National 3-Star Green Building Standard and the LEED Gold certification.

Construction of Jiuzhai Visitor Service Facilities started in December 2018 and is expected to be completed in August 2020.
