2020 WAN Awards entry: Snyder Center, Phillips Academy Andover - Perkins and Will

Snyder Center, Phillips Academy Andover by Perkins and Will is an entry in the Leisure Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

by Copy taken from 2020 entry 22 June 2020 2020 Future Projects

Located on the southern edge of campus, the Snyder Center acts as a gateway to the athletics district. Situated on a sloping site, the building connects both edges of campus through a light filled, interior stair gallery, creating a dynamic social environment that unifies various programs and activities.

Interplay between the building’s two levels organizes the design, connecting interior spaces with the surrounding landscape. The spatial parti is comprised of three primary volumes stitched together by a circulation spine unified by a singular roof canopy framing the interior spaces.

Inspired by the surrounding site, the building design utilizes a modest material trifecta: concrete, metal, and wood. Masonry corbelling techniques coupled with a variety of finishes emphasize a weight and continuity through the building’s base. Varied metal panel profiles and vertical extrusions create a rigorous module that provides texture and depth to the upper volume. Beech wood, salvaged from trees on site, was used to create millwork that brings warmth to social spaces, highlighting both the character of the wood and the history of the site.

Consistent with the athletics master plan, the facility is sited to provide a strategic relationship with an existing adjacent ice arena. The two projects are thermally linked, allowing the Snyder Center to utilize waste heat from the ice making process, resulting in a 50% energy savings. Coupled with optimization of the building’s solar orientation, a large PV array on the roof results in a Net-Zero Energy facility.
