Rare masterpieces from the High Middle Ages were brought together from Norway and Spain for the temporary North & South exhibition at Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht, The Netherlands. It’s a unique combination - this type of art from Middle Europe has been all but lost.

Tinker designed a voyage of discovery to the origins of these pieces, starting from the mysterious, 800-year-old statue of the Virgin Mary from the museum’s collection. It takes visitors through five distinctive rooms, each with a different colour scheme and atmosphere, and each containing a piece of the puzzle that will help them unravel the mystery of this type of art.

Visitors will discover that there are remarkable similarities in the visual language used in Mary’s ‘surviving relatives’ from the far north and south of Europe as travel was quite common at the time. They were all linked to the altar, although a complete altar was not preserved anywhere in the world. The colourful graphic layer connects past to to present. Using the visual language from the Middle Ages, a lucid style with a modern twist adds depth and context to the collection.

The grand finale of the exhibition is the way Mary has impressively returned to her original context in the last room. We brought her spiritual world to life in a 4D experience of the medieval altar. Through projections, art, music, and scent, visitors get to experience how medieval people may have experienced the celebration of Mass.
