With an overall design area of around 39,000 square meters, the Westin Zhongshan Guzhen stands as the landmark of Zhongshan Ancient Town, the capital of decorative lighting in China. The hotel is a display window to the charm of the capital by serving the local lighting exhibition centre and events. Based on that, YANG explores the core culture and spiritual value behind the town to create a new urban image that embraces both environment protection and regional characteristics.

To meet the owner’s requirement for “stain resistance and durability”, YANG utilizes numerous dark-colored materials like stone, metal and wood in design, creating Westin’s first dark-toned hotel. Particularly, the ceiling is made of fire-proof anti-rot aluminum plates to save maintenance costs. However, a large area of plates looks not only in lack of design, but also of quality. To solve this problem, YANG designed the leaf pattern on the ceiling, and assembled plates with different specifications to form leaf stems. The design echoes the relaxing and tranquil atmosphere of the space, and elevates the sense of art and quality.

To interpret local culture, the design does not simply showcase lights, but conveys the warmness, brightness and hope behind them so that each person entering the hotel can resonate with the space. Themed by “Shi Li Light Street”, “Studying Diligently Under the Lamplight” and “Brilliantly Illuminated”, the design aims to create an emotional ambience and tells the story of lighting and urban development.

Last year more than 40 countries took part in the WIN Awards with strong showings from Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. And we saw some truly outstanding interior designs, take a look at the winners from last year here.
