Nulty Bespoke produced a creative lighting feature for Hard Rock Hotel London, designed to help bring the brand ethos to life and add a sense of drama to the reception area of the hotel. Located above the curved reception desks, the musically inspired lighting feature began with the idea of celebrating the humble drumstick.

The concept then developed into the construction and installation of a handcrafted installation featuring 135 fibre optic cables, which were hung from the ceiling and feature handmade ‘drumsticks’ (600mm long) at the end of each fibre. The drumsticks appear to have light emanating from their tip, suggesting the idea that music is escaping from the drum stick itself. Each of the cables is hung at different lengths (1m at the longest), giving the overall impression that the installation represents a large sound wave.

A projector hidden within the ceiling transmits the light through the fibres to provide the cool white temperature of the light feature. A twinkling effect is achieved via the projector and the glow is emphasised by a small piece of frosted acrylic used at the tip of each drumstick.

It took three weeks for a specialist wood turner, with over 45 years of craftsmanship experience to hand make all the maple drumsticks. The sticks were constructed in halves, in order to drill a hole all of the way through. They were then seamlessly joined together and turned on a lathe, enabling the fibre optics to be inserted on site.

Last year more than 40 countries took part in the WIN Awards with strong showings from Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. And we saw some truly outstanding interior designs, take a look at the winners from last year here.
