Al Salam Palace Museum was originally designed and built in the late 1950s as a residential house for Sheikh Saad Al Abdullah Al Salem Al Sabah. The palace was later transformed into an official state guest house during the 1960s to meet the need of hosting foreign delegations that began to visit Kuwait after becoming a member of the United Nations.

The palace welcomed 166 World Leaders,Rulers,Emperors and VIPs alike, some of which include Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, former French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing and Charles and Diana, the Prince and Princess of Wales. After the destruction of the palace in 1990 during the brutal Iraqi invasion, the palace was in a state of hiatus. The Amiri Diwan of Kuwait was tasked to renovate and convert the palace into a world-class museum serving as an official State museum that narrates 300 years of Kuwaiti history.

In 2013, after 23 years of abandonment, Sheikha Mona Al-Jaber Al-Sabah proposed to the Minister of Amiri Diwan Affairs and the Chairman of the Higher Committee of Cultural Centers, to give the heritage building a new purpose, and transform it into a national museum. The Palace, with total restoration costs estimated around KD 5 million (16.5 USD), is characterized by its beautiful luxurious facilities. Its round-shaped design and fancy exterior, gave way to the beauty of its interior.

The Palace housed crystal chandeliers’ illuminating the palace and projecting light through its windows for people to enjoy. The reconstruction process took nearly six years.

Last year more than 40 countries took part in the WIN Awards with strong showings from Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. And we saw some truly outstanding interior designs, take a look at the winners from last year here.
