When moving their headquarters to two floors at the top of the city’s skyline, this well-established San Francisco investment firm desired an elegant workspace that would echo the firm’s ideals and project a fresh image for the twenty-first century.

Against a backdrop of sky and unobstructed views, a new space is crafted with an elegant, timeless palette of natural materials. The lobby is wrapped in a ribbon of custom white oak wood slats set against a Calacatta marble floor and reception desk. Sculptural furniture and an impeccably curated sitting gallery of historical San Francisco maps, from the firm’s own collection, define a unique experience that reflects the company’s legacy.

Through the visioning process, the team shifted away from traditional workplace planning where private offices line perimeter windows, monopolizing light and views. Instead, following a more democratic ideal, the circulation lines the perimeter with inboard private offices framed with low-iron glass. This plan allows all employees to share in the unobstructed city views while mitigating solar heat gain and glare on individual workstations.

To maintain the sense of openness to the incredible panorama, full height glass comprises majority of the partitions to exaggerate the openness of the exterior (sky) and bring light and views deep into the plan. In certain locations, frosted glass, clerestories, and sidelights allow light to penetrate while still providing the desired visual privacy for conference and office spaces within the open plan. This openness facilitates interaction between employees across both floors and maintains timeless form and material.
