Amsterdam UMC Imaging Center by Wiegerinck

The Amsterdam UMC Imaging Center adds unique features to the national health and life sciences cluster. The biggest concentration of cutting-edge medical imaging techniques available in Europe. Radiologists and nuclear physicians are able to look with more detail into the anatomical structures and physiological, metabolic and molecular processes of the human body. A uniquely equipped lab is created to speed up medical and pharmaceutical research. A radiopharmaceutical manufacturer ensures the availability of medical isotopes.

The main themes for the design of the new Imaging Center are meeting, communication and cooperation. Meeting between patients, caregivers and researchers. Communication and collaboration between these groups will stimulate the development of knowledge and expertise. This creates the synergy that will ensure an world-class institution.

Judge's comment:

Good intuitive design - with the focus on the patient - where it should be.

Klarahus by ERIK arkitekter

Today, cooking is recognized as an art and the meal must be an unforgettable experience that should speak to all our senses. So why is the production of food to our elderly hidden in a clinically white room full of stainless steel and non-slip floors?

The goal was to show all citizens that care was taken to make high quality meals for the elderly. At the same time, the original thought was to show that happy employees make high quality meals so the chefs were involved in the project from the beginning in order to ensure the working environment.

Judge's comment:

Very well executed construction, the integration with the existing building results in an interesting match.

ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development by Stantec Architecture Ltd

ErinoakKids (EOK) is Ontario’s largest children’s treatment and development centre, providing treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for children up to age 18 with a range of emotional and physical challenges. To achieve equity of access across the Greater Toronto Area, three sites were selected for development - Brampton, Mississauga and Oakville.

Designed as a prototypical ‘kit-of-parts’ each of the three two-story buildings is organized around a mass timber ‘main street’ and a beautifully landscaped ‘central courtyard’. Play areas, therapeutic programs, and recreational spaces are located along and around these two organizing elements, encouraging therapy, education, and discovery. The concepts of play, achievement, and memory are key to the design approach. The generous landing of the central feature stair projects into the courtyard and, with its protective shroud, transforms into a ‘treehouse’ - the quintessential symbol of ‘play’.

Judge's comment:

Great use of colour and space - really appealing to children and a sense of play. Uplifting design which really links to health and wellness.

Christian Doppler Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital Salzburg by Kaufmann + Partner Architekten and Kleboth und Dollnig ZT GmbH

An independent village served as the inspiration for the new building of the child and youth psychiatric clinic. A house that functions like a small campus, consisting of a variety of green courtyards, gardens and pavilions.

The 3-storey head building serves as a gate between the inside and outside world. This is where the reception is located and where the therapy and staff rooms are concentrated.

The residential groups are located on one level as a 'deep plan'. Along the central access axis the living groups and individually designed play and sleeping courtyards are grouped alternately. A 'village square' forms the spatial and functional centre.

Judge's comment:

Well considered space for healing - great internal layouts and connection to outside.

Health center under gunren Boqi by BAZUO Architecture Studio Co., Ltd

The project is located in Baga town, Pollan county, Ngari prefecture, Tibet autonomous region, and aims to provide basic medical services to 2,000 permanent residents and tourists. The medical services include outpatient, treatment and 20 beds in hospital, medical gas, sewage treatment station and other ancillary facilities.

Because of the lack of electricity, a ramp was used to solve the problem of actual demand in a low-tech way, and this feature became a prominent feature of the whole project, as well as meeting various spiritual needs towards Kailash.

Judge's comment:

Innovative, low energy, tradition and modern technique.

The Ark, Noah's Ark Children's Hospice by Squire & Partners

The Ark is the first new hospice building in London for 10 years and the first purpose-built facility for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice – who previously provided care for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families in homes or hired halls. The brief sought an inspiring space for palliative care, relaxation and adventure within a ‘home-from-home’ environment, designed for the needs of children.

Set on the natural incline of its 7.5-acre nature reserve setting, The Ark is discreetly carved into the hillside, offering a holistic indoor-outdoor care journey not restricted to treatment rooms but which begins upon arrival, expands through the building and continues to the therapeutic gardens, demonstrating the ultimate link between palliative care, wellbeing and nature.

Judge's comment:

Really lovely link and understanding of the healing aspects of nature and involving this in the design. Uplifting spaces, thoughtful design.
