Local stone huts inspire Effkey’s design on Italian landscape

Architecture studio Effkey combines high quality surfaces, furnishings and services with the typical shades of local colours, enriching the atmosphere of southern Italy

by Georgina Johnston 24 September 2020

Perla Saracena, a luxury resort in Apulia overlooking the Torre Pali coast, is the setting for six small villas and three suites with a panoramic penthouse designed by Francesco Maglie’s architectural studio Effkey and engineer Luigi Verardi. Nestled in the Salento landscape, these housing solutions are inspired by the rural charm of the local farmers’ “pajare” (stone huts), offering small pearls of interior design enveloped by technological comfort. Light and bright rooms characterise these structures, in which water blade showers that provide a cervical massage, hand-painted Kerlite trompe-l’oeil panels and antibacterial floors coexist with dry stone walls, Mediterranean wood, local vegetation and natural stone.

Cotto d’Este’s, the Modena-based company, demonstrated its ability to engage with the architectural sector, successfully offering exclusivity and luxury with projects. The two ton-sur-ton shades in the Cement Project collection, chosen for the coverings used in the suites’ bathrooms, convey a cohesive and contemporary effect in the warm, lively Salento atmosphere that evokes local traditions. The Cem finish evokes manually levelled concrete floors and is characterised by infinite shades of grey and its original glossy/matt reflection when exposed to light, which gives the space a bold style. The collections of Cotto d’Este, in the context of the enchanting Perla Saracena resort, accentuate the contrast between modernity and tradition, nature and urban style, while maintaining harmonious continuity with the outdoor environment.
