Simplicity and aesthetics combine in newly renovated RC34 House

Zooco Estudio have completed the renovation of a detached single-family dwelling located at the north-west of Madrid, Spain

by Georgina Johnston 29 September 2020

The original concrete structure was uncovered and redesigned with a new distribution that worked independently from the structure. The main intervention consisted in generating a double height around the living area of the house; this organised the lobby in the upper floor. A shelf rises as a unifying element, colonising both living and lobby spaces. This way the aesthetic and functionality were combined into a single element; this volume integrated the access to the private area, bedroom, dressing room and bathroom, and segregated the day area of the living and dining room, hosting a wine cellar, a desk and extra storage.

The first stairway stretch is a solid, lifted volume in contrast with the second stretch that develops into a corrugated metal sheet that folds, generating steps. The main element of the project, designed in wood slabs, sets the different uses of the house; the material selection is binary; oak tree wood in pavements and white surface finish in shelves, walls and roof. This scheme is twisted in the kitchen area. In the bedrooms level the white slats note the limit of the hallway hiding the bathroom and bedroom doors.
