ZGF Architects complete Reed College Trillium Residence Hall

The 66,285 sq ft student housing facility sitting on the Reed College campus in Portland, Oregon is Reed’s newest and largest residence hall

by Georgina Johnston 18 September 2020

The residence hall was designed to provide a strong sense of home for newly arriving students; accommodating up to 180. To reduce stress and create an uplifting interior environment, floor-to-ceiling windows immerse students in the lush context of their campus surroundings and create light-filled spaces in which to take refuge or socialise.

While the building’s articulated exterior juxtaposes layers of brick, copper, and glass to evoke the rich architectural heritage of Reed’s campus, the building will prepare students for the workplace of today. Trillium’s design borrows from the well-established design principles of the modern workplace and high performing offices; study nooks in various sizes, opportunities for fresh air and outdoor collaboration, and a mix of informal and formal meeting places offer residents flexibility and choice in how and where they study.

The floorplan was concepted as a pinwheel with three wings and a central atrium at its heart. Inside, the double-height atrium opens to hallways and study nooks. A series of visually and acoustically connected spaces, via a set of open stairs, keeps residents within eyesight or earshot of other students learning, sharing ideas, and participating in all that Reed has to offer.
