Interval Architect win second place with Sky Villa

The winning team, led by Oscar KO and GU Yunduan, came second in the International Competition for Marissa Duplex Apartments, held by Alsalimi Co. Ltd., Saudi Arabia

by Georgina Johnston 20 October 2020 Performing Spaces

The design aims to offer people an experience of living in a stand-alone villa while occupying an apartment building. All units are stacked upon one another in a stepped form to maximise the area of private terrace of each unit. The elevated duplex apartments with large and multiple terraces resemble what has been called a Sky Villa.

To avoid direct and strong heat from the sun, all the units are oriented towards the North. The elevated stepping form of the architecture has also created a large area of shaded public space, measuring the area of almost the entire site, under the residential units. This allows more efficient public activities in an environmental-friendly climatic condition.

Within the large area of shaded public space under the residential units, several enclosed public programmes have been inserted, such as kids room, gym and multipurpose hall which allows these public programs to be more reachable from the apartments. Several leisure platforms have been designed in the shaded public area to allow more public activities. These leisure platforms at various levels are connected by staircases and therefore also function as fire-escape staircases for the building. The tall shaded public area also allows opportunities to hang sculptures, artworks, plants, playing nets and etc. in order to create a vibrant communal atmosphere.

The interior layout of the duplex apartment fully responds to the large terrace created by the architecture. In front of each terrace, Interval Architects have designed T, the double height living and dining spaces are put in front of the terrace. Together with the open kitchen, the living area and the dining area formed an open space that connects visually and spatially out to the terrace. Guest room is located behind the kitchen and the living area to allow more privacy for the family members when guests visit. The master bedroom and master bathroom are separated by sliding doors to allow both an open and separated condition between the master bedroom and its bathroom.
