Istituto Marangoni’s new Masters in Product & Furniture Design

Starting from October 2020, Istituto Marangoni will offer a completely renovated Master in Product & Furniture Design, with the aim of involving participants to live a real and innovative research experience in close contact with well known designers and leading companies in the world of ‘Made in Italy’ furniture

by Georgina Johnston 16 October 2020

The course, conceived by Giulio Cappellini, architect and brand ambassador of Istituto Marangoni, will be divided into three distinct terms, in each of which students will be assigned a research project in collaboration with a designer and a company.

It will be an opportunity to explore investigative paths that companies do not have the opportunity to face every day and arrive at highly innovative results, with the aim of going beyond the interpretation of the brand the new object to be included in the catalogue by identifying new scenarios characterised by strong research content.

In all the projects, the brief will be guided by the School of Design of Istituto Marangoni together with the designers involved, exponents of the new generation entrusted with the legacy of the Masters of design.

Elena Salmistraro, among the most prominent names of the new generation of Italian design and synonymous with creative freedom, colour and artistic narration, will guide the students in the first term, in a project in collaboration with Moroso, a leading brand of Italian design that has been able to reconcile artisan and sartorial know-how with industrial production processes, identifying an element of uniqueness in the encounter between design, contemporary art and fashion.

Students will have the objective of exploring new aesthetic and material solutions to be applied to the brand's products, a research that, until now, has only marginally affected the company, and which through this project will lead to a more visionary approach, consolidating the role of Moroso as the protagonist of modern design.

Philippe Nigro will be the lead for the second term. The brand with which Nigro and students will confront in this term will be Alias, a leading company in the development of furniture systems for the contemporary world characterised by attention to the aesthetic innovations of the sector and the technical quality of its products. The research project will investigate new possible furnishing solutions that favour fluid work, integrating remote and proximity situations, private spaces and work environments, defining a flexible and functional dimension able to combine the efficiency of smart working with sophisticated experience of ‘Made in Italy’ furniture.

The third project will involve Moreno Vannini of Studio Nendo, known for its ability to combine form and lightness in highly poetic and evocative furnishing objects, and Alessi company, leader in the sector of accessories for the house and worldwide symbol of the vocation in search of Italian design. A mix of opposites that aims to combine Nendo's clean and minimalist approach with Alessi's distinctive ability to combine playful lightness and cultural depth in highly iconic objects.

The new Master in Product & Furniture Design of Istituto Marangoni represents a truly unique didactic path, designed to build a new way of imagining the relationship between designers, companies and school, a dialogue that will allow you to undertake research paths that are also surprising for companies themselves involved in projects, a sure incentive to imagine the objects, the spaces and the relationships of tomorrow.

M. Zanatta, School Director, Istituto Marangoni Milano Design

The Master in Product & Furniture Design is an annual course aimed at those who want to acquire in-depth skills on project methodology and a unique point of observation on the current furniture and product design sector, with that value of "Italianness" well represented by excellent companies that will become an integral part of an unprecedented and highly innovation oriented training path.
