Singapore’s Avenue South Residences unveiled by ADDP Architects

Sustainability, access to green space and innovative PPVC modulation are at the core of this two 56 storey flagship development

by Georgina Johnston 25 November 2020 Sustainable Buildings

ADDP Architects have unveiled plans and renderings for its Avenue South Residences project. An innovative and eco conscious residential district that is anchored by two 56 storey prefabricated skyscrapers, Avenue South Residences sits amidst five historically preserved buildings on one of Singapore's most verdant avenues. The project is scheduled for completion in 2026.

ADDP Architects' Avenue South Residences consists of two super high rise buildings composed of prefabricated units. The two flagship skyscrapers will be erected amidst the original backdrop of five four-storey heritage buildings created in the Art Deco Style that are currently on Silat Avenue amongst the historical KTM Rail Coordinator area. The Avenue South Residences symbolise the ADDP Architects' ability to fuse futuristic and ecologically conscious modern housing while paying homage to the heritage of Singapore. This live-work-play concept aims to provide a new, innovative residential product while preserving the neighbourhood's verdant nature and its green spaces.

ADDP Architects' Avenue South Park intends to provide residents with meaningful engagement to the surrounding environment by forming an inclusive oasis like community space surrounded by a majestic canopy of conserved trees. The distinct 56 storey tall twin towers stand out with their elegant simplicity and sharp lines coupled with rhythmically located pockets of sky terraces.

A textured fabric is expressed through repetition of wood coloured vertical screens, offering a sun-shading application. Lush sky terraces inserted into the facade design of the two skyscrapers serve to break down the scale of the towers and create a visual connection to nature. These terraces are accessible to residents and offer multistorey green spaces at varying levels above the city. Inspired by elements of tropical architecture and multi heightened positioning, the sky terraces, balconies and sun-shading screens harmoniously integrate with the overall building form and architectural treatment of the development.

The complex's urban public park provides a gateway to the adjacent rail corridor network, hence ensuring an active edge and entrance for the project. The residential development's proximity to nature includes trails and outdoor activities and provides a sense of verdant respite in Singapore's otherwise bustling urban core.

The Avenue South Residences show attention to innovative sustainability with its parking garages; full height green walls wrap around the car park podium on all sides. This living green wall exposes the car park levels from the adjacent conserved blocks and neighbouring blocks while providing aesthetic and calming verdant amenities.

To further its integration as an urban green space, and provide a healthy and eco conscious living experience, the facade facing the Rail Corridor at Avenue South Residences showcases an outdoor vertical play green wall with creeper plants. The interactive vertical gardens serve as a casual screening for the car park. They include a built in observation deck, rock climbing walls and ramps linking to a playground on the ground level.

The energy efficiency of both buildings is enhanced by the sensitive placement of the twin super high rise residential towers, oriented in the North-South direction to capitalise on optimal passive solar design and airflow. These towers are arranged in a slightly radial manner forming a backdrop of the four storey conserved blocks.

The towers are also placed to minimise its green footprint while allowing for adequate setback distances to preserve a view corridor, allowing a direct visual connection from the neighbouring HDB blocks while also mitigating traffic noise. The Avenue South Residences will also feature the most advanced approach to sustainable PPVC construction, expertise championed by ADDP. Before assemblage, 80% of each module for Avenue South Residences is to be created off site, with each module only requiring to be stacked and joined together on site.

The Avenue South Residences pay homage to Singapore's historical past with the preservation of five existing buildings primarily for residential use. ADDP Architects' have also integrated the preserved buildings into a network in line with the island wide Green Connectors concept, which serves to encourage the use of green and sustainable modes of transportation.
