Keeping the faith by redefining the space: how places of worship adapt post-covid

Congregations and their architect consultants are exploring ways to engage a new community and to carefully define the function of their buildings to broaden relevance and redefine their important place in local community life

by Georgina Johnston 01 January 2021 Future Projects

BNKC Partner, Elie Newman is a Toronto based architect and urban designer for several faith based institutions. He’s designed and renovated Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox churches and synagogues, and has conducted studies to develop design strategies for other religious groups.

Most recently Newman is spearheading the planning and design for a significant addition and upgrade to Beth Sholom, which will support new programs and improve the building’s ability to accommodate the day-to-day activities within the synagogue.

It’s about creating a sacred space that’s more than just a place for prayer, it’s a centre for social community life with multipurpose features, which offer something for everyone.
