Traders In Purple transform Australia’s former church into ‘The Abbey’ residences

A heritage-listed church built in the 1920s and located a block from Cronulla’s Shelly Beach, is being transformed into a boutique residential community, this unique project called ‘The Abbey’ will comprise seven coastal-luxe homes, three of which are built within the former church and the Sunday School hall

by Georgina Johnston 15 January 2021 Housing

Traders In Purple, purchased the former South Cronulla Uniting Church site in Wilshire Avenue and have since converted the original structure and also added four executive residences.

Our vision was to pay a legacy to the rich history of this property while creating high-end sophisticated residences that will become like private sanctums. With more than 30 years of experience our focus has always been to have a positive and enduring impact on the local community. The Abbey represents our commitment to the highest quality and will set a new benchmark for development delivering low maintenance luxury coastal living in South Cronulla. It is an idyllic and highly sought location, just a short 350 m walk from the ocean pool at Shelly Beach, nearby playgrounds, surrounding parklands with local shopping and cafes also close by. The church façade just adds a sense of calmness to the entire site and coupled with extensive landscaping, it creates a beautiful setting for everyday living.

Charles Daoud, Director

The concept for the site, which was brought to reality by AJH + Architects, recently won silver at the Sydney Design Awards. The executive three bedroom residences feature multiple living spaces and a contemporary interior with vaulted ceilings, bespoke joinery and warm natural textures including marble, timber and stone.

Residents can expect finishes such as gas fireplaces surrounded by aged brass and vein cut travertine, built-in cocktail bar and elegant kitchens fitted with state-of-the art Gaggenau appliances, brush gold tapware and even a wine fridge.

The pet friendly properties feature a private, beautifully landscaped courtyard with built-in BBQ facilities. Each home will include private double garaging and storage located within a secure basement, most with internal access. There is also a communal lift from the garage to ground level.

The foundation stone for the original building is dated 18 April 1924 and was built at a time when the Cronulla peninsula was developing. As an ‘interwar church’ its local heritage listing related to its simple gabled form, roof line and finishes. It ceased operating as a church in 2016 when the Uniting Church amalgamated local parishes and placed the building, an adjoining hall and residential property up for sale.
