C P Kukreja Architects win the HUDCO Design Awards

The project HRRL Township, Barmer, won in the category New and Innovative Town Design Solutions/Eco Cities

by Georgina Johnston 22 February 2021 Landscape

The project is spread over 250 acres and is being developed as a thriving eco city, imbibing vernacular design and construction strategies.

The HRRL Township project is a joint venture company (HRRL) between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Government of Rajasthan. It is conceptualised as a self-sufficient township for the employees of this major Indian oil company. It was awarded to the Architects through a national competition.

The Township flourishes as a sustainable endeavour with features such as low-rise edifices with local Rajasthani architectural elements, dense natural vegetation, open and shared recreational areas and a well spread out water body that maintains the micro-climate within and around the site.

Currently in construction, the site is located adjacent to HRRL’s upcoming oil refinery and in the interiors of Thar Desert. The form and layout of the Township sought inspiration from Johad, an oasis. The true meaning of that, in desert environments, is ‘an isolated area of desert vegetation, typically surrounding a water source which provides a protected habitat for flora and fauna including humans.’

The architects have used concepts which would allow the township to thrive as a regeneration model, one which revives the parched region whilst using vernacular design techniques. The township will also be ‘smart’ and sustainable with a deep focus on water conservation and management.
