Design Hotels open its first Osaka based hotel

Zentis Osaka’s design focused bolthole is carved from a new build by Toshiken architecture office and Kajima Design, with interiors from Tara Bernerd.

Design driven and internationally inspired, the public spaces and 212 guest rooms embody a fresh take on the boutique hotel concept while simultaneously possessing an industrial edge and Bernerd’s tribute to Japanese modular design.

Every area of the hotel has been built to provide simplicity, warmth and world-class design. The 16 storey building is defined by Toshiken architecture office and Kajima Design’s clean lines, soaring ceilings and double height windows.

A tale of two cities: the Austin Proper Hotel and LA’s Hotel June

Set amid the buzzing commercial and cultural creativity of the 2nd Street District, Austin Proper Hotel emerges as the neighbourhood’s hottest new landmark housed within a contemporary 32 storey highrise.

In contrast to the modernity of the new-build construction, the design concept of Austin Proper Hotel draws inspiration from the area’s historic, Craftsman-style architecture.

The 244 rooms and suites are defined by an eclectic mix of ceramics and artwork, including tchotchke trays, hand-raked cabinet inlay tiles commissioned from Van Dyke, and intricate string wall art by Magda Saveg. The use of hardwood flooring and travertine sourced from Texan quarries creates an organic backdrop to tactile furnishings designed by Wearstler and luxurious beds covered in Fili D’oro and Bellino linens.

Canada’s post-covid condos with mindfulness at their core

Designed by Revery Architecture, The Butterfly is a new condo building in Vancouver which presents a bold, new approach to high-rise living by introducing shared outdoor garden spaces, and semi-private gardens, on each level to encourage social interactions among residents while reconnecting them with nature.

These semi-private spaces are envisioned to support informal gatherings that can facilitate the formation of sub-communities within the larger strata and help to break down the social barriers commonly associated with high-rise living. The outdoor breezeways also have significant environmental advantages by greatly improving the opportunities for natural daylighting, ventilation, and cooling.

Emphasising natural air, light and materials, the tower seeks to stimulate the senses and encourage mindfulness in a way that transforms its residents each time they enter their suite.

Echo: UNStudio’s Dutch education complex for TU Delft

UNStudio, in collaboration with Arup and BBN, have designed a new multifunctional and flexible education building for TU Delft, a future-proof campus currently under construction.

Currently under construction and due for completion in Dec 2021, Echo will house a total of seven teaching rooms, most with a flexible layout. The largest lecture room, which can accommodate 700 people, can be divided into three separate rooms. Some 300 study spaces can be used for group work and self-study.

The focus will be on medium-sized and large teaching rooms, accommodating between 150 and 700 people. In addition to these larger rooms, there will also be a ‘case-study’ room that will be particularly suitable for motivational teaching/interaction between lecturers and students, in addition to four level rooms for project-based teaching, each accommodating almost 70 people.

The Italian spirit was both a prerequisite and a strength, which made the difference in this project. Fabrics referencing the typical colours of the area (in particular red and blue) were used to reiterate the constant dialogue between the outside and the inside.

Starting from the curved contours which characterise the property, the designers opted for the incorporation of large, keel-like shapes into the design, playing with spatial awareness from the outside and creating an architectural structure unique in its kind.

The most original feature of the structure is the Grand Hall, an eight metre high great room which houses the fireplace, the bar and other spaces typical of an international hotel. A part of the restaurant directly faces the grand hall, creating a close relationship between the ground and second floor.

The spa includes a panoramic view of the city, a gym, and a relaxation area on the upper floors which offers a fascinating view of both the urban skyline and the surrounding mountains.
