Students Reinventing Cities: C40 Cities competition to combat climate change

Teams of university students will share their vision for transforming 18 city neighbourhoods to deliver a green and just recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.

A total of 18 global cities, including Buenos Aires, Paris, Washington D.C., and Delhi have launched Students Reinventing Cities, a pioneering competition that will enable students and universities from across the globe to share their vision for a green and just reinvention of our cities.

In a first of its kind, the competition is being led by C40 Cities - the global network of cities committed to bold climate action. The C40 Students Reinventing Cities Competition is dedicated to transforming cities in the face of the climate crisis, by driving an active collaboration between cities and academia. The competition will ignite creative, imaginative, and tangible ways to decarbonise city neighbourhoods, as well as to support thriving and resilient life for local communities.

The winning projects will be celebrated in a global communication campaign and winning students will be invited to present their projects to business leaders, city officials and leading climate organisations.

Academia and students who are interested in entering the competition, follow here. Deadline for entries is March 2021. The finalists will then be selected and invited to submit their final proposals by May 2021. A jury from the city and C40 Cities will select a winner for each city site, which will be announced at a ceremony in July 2021.

G8A’s Jungle Station in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City

In the core of Ho Chi Minh City and enclosed in the centre of a large factory complex, “Jungle Station” sets a benchmark for conceptual design.

In the context of a dense urban landscape it is logical that the rising start-up community would turn towards the highly efficient concept of coworking for their professional solutions. These spaces must effectively combine the positives of both public and private arenas offering the professional users an efficient resource platform whilst also encouraging social interactions and accommodating for the temporary visitor.

By opening a central chasm and removing a large part of the roofing, natural sunlight filtered through the layers of leaves and allowed to spill through the building, enhancing the sensation of a naturally tropical, vegetal environment. As the sunlight shifts over the building the users are able to feel in touch with the natural advancement of the day. Each closed office space, distributed rationally along the facades is able to view this luminous centrepiece.

Openstudio Architect and Igloo Regeneration announced as joint winners in the Home of 2030 competition

Connector Housing, by Openstudio with Hoare Lea, LDA Design, Gardiner & Theobald and EngineersHRW, has been announced as joint winners with Igloo Regeneration’s +Home in the Home of 2030 open Design Competition.

Connector Housing uses an architectural and landscape framework which can generate an almost infinite choice of housing design. Varying densities and different mixes of houses and apartments are available, with a variety of site configurations, vertical heights, external appearances and internal layouts.

The ‘Connector’ is a flexible vertical unit which can accommodate stairs, a lift, shared communal or work spaces, storage, and direct access to the communal gardens from upper level apartments. The external envelopes of the ‘Base Unit’, and the ‘Loft’ are consistent, for cost effective, high-quality construction. Internal layouts are flexible and adaptable. Spaces can be entirely re-customised in response to changing occupant needs, and include age-friendly and multi-generational layouts.

Designed with generous floor to ceiling heights and excellent daylight levels, Connector Housing can take advantage of the best available materials, construction systems, including off-site construction, and technology. It works equally well for homes being built today or in the future.
