AA Architects overcome office interior design obstacles in Pune

Challenge to change the character of residential space into a commercial one, making it appear more spacious and open

by Georgina Johnston 30 March 2021

The existing unit was formerly a 30 year old 2 BHK residential apartment with a carpet area of 710 sq ft on the first floor. As the existing planning and structural grid was according to those of residential rooms there were certain limitations; small room sizes, columns within short distances, and the positioning of the existing toilets which could not have been shifted due to external plumbing lines.

All the internal walls, including some external walls, were removed, which opened up the space. The sizes, locations and proportions of the windows were planned as per the new furniture layout. The spatial planning and zoning was done keeping in mind the circulation of the visitor and aiming for a minimum wastage of space. The reception area and the small landscaped balcony adjacent to it forms the heart of the office, with all the other activities opening into it.

Shelves act as a partition between studio and cabin, thus increasing the usable floor space. Openings placed at eye level bring in adequate amounts of light and ventilation, further maintaining the privacy of the studio due to size and position of the opening. Trees planted on either side also contribute to privacy, enhancing the atmosphere of the studio. Door panels are marked by stark colour veneer to enhance the entrance.

The combination of bright yellow and grey in the floor is an attempt to make the space look vibrant. Adding a tree in the reception helps keep the architectural language consistent with the landscaped balcony. The small landscaped area created on the canopy slab extends the landscape further, thus utilising the otherwise unused, dead roof. MS Fabricated grill defines the internal reception waiting area by visibly connecting the outdoor space to it, also acting as a screen to hide the ill maintained building in front to some extent. The pantry is placed as a buffer to the toilet, utilising the potentially dead space between toilet and reception.

The colour palette is well thought to maintain the serenity of the cabin, as well as office. The steel element adds onto the palette, thus acting as the cabin’s centrepiece.
