Pattern Design’s “Diamond in the Desert” with Qatar’s Education City Stadium

Earning its name from its iridescent diamond nestled on a vibrant landscaped podium, the project was awarded a five star rating under Global Sustainability Assessment System

by Georgina Johnston 15 April 2021 Sustainable Buildings

The faceted nature of the structure’s metallic fabric facade is formed by a strong geometric tessellation consisting of diamonds and triangles. This distinct design means each panel will reflect the constantly changing lighting of the surrounding landscape. Fans will see the stadium sparkle with diverse hues, and mirror the surrounding settings. As the sun moves through the sky, the shifting light animates and transforms the stadium's appearance to create the illusion of a structure in constant motion. At night, the stadium glows from within, its light gleaming through the facade.

Located at the heart of Qatar Foundation’s Education City campus, home to branches of campuses from eight global universities, Education City Stadium is designed to host a range of sporting events; the ultra-modern facility will host quarter final matches of the FIFA World Cup 2022 Tournament in Doha. At least 55% of the project materials came from sustainable sources, and 28% of construction materials have recycled contents.

The stadium’s location in Education City was selected with accessibility in mind. All fans have only a short distance to travel to their seats, their journey taking them along shaded, tree-lined paths set against the venue’s spectacular views.

Once fans take their seats, the bespoke design of the building responds to the climactic challenges of a desert stadium. The stadium features direct under-seat bowl cooling for every spectator, ensuring comfort even in the summer months.

When the FIFA World Cup 2022 has concluded, the stadium complex will remain a centrepiece for the community.

Fenwick Iribarren Architects and Arup developed the stadium concept in early 2014. Pattern Design was appointed as Lead Designer and Architect in 2016. Alongside Buro Happold, Pattern’s role included Value Engineering scheme, updating the design to the new FIFA standards and developing the scheme from RIBA Stage six. Pattern and Buro Happold delivered the scheme with Main Contractor JPAC (Joannou & Paraskevaides Conspel Qatar JV).

Education City Stadium opened in June 2020 and is set to host events for the first time having postponed the 2019 edition due to the COVID-19 crisis.
