VVS Architect’s Jianye Lanhai Zheng Tendency Demo Plot in China

The design took the opportunity to combine the ancient with the contemporary in Zhengzhou, balancing traditional elements with a degree of modernisation

by Georgina Johnston 30 April 2021 Landscape

The project is located in the future land and air transportation hub of Zhengzhou. The two horizontal and two vertical road network systems reach into the city.

Green plants are twisted into a planet shape at the entrance, suspended mid air and surrounded by a ribbon-like rattan rope that winds up and down; as soon as one looks down, there is an image of the Earth. This evokes a sense of weightlessness that blurs the boundaries of time and space.

The curtain wall in the patio features a 360° view where the multidimensional bridge between the exterior and interior is fluid with the natural tones of beige, green, and brown.

The library matches with the curtain wall of the patio and the arc of the original wood colour continues the aesthetic language of the green landscape opposite; creating a consistent visual dialogue between spaces.

The spiral escalator gives access to the second floor where the upstairs is calm and quiet, in contrast to the lower levels which are more spirited. The bamboo pavilions that float on the black stone pay homage to ancestral architecture.
