2021 WAN Awards entry: Bridge Pavilion - VRAP

Bridge Pavilion by VRAP is an entry in the Small Spaces category of the 2021 WAN Awards

by Copy taken from 2021 entry 06 April 2021 2021

A bridge was designed as a cultural pavilion on the creek to connect villagers living on the both sides. Since some government-guided renovation has started on the east bank, the bridge can be implemented as a strategic start toward the revitalization for the west bank. It is a pedestrian bridge, a leisure pavilion and also a landscape theatre, which reflects the recognition of the inherently infrastructural nature of rural public architecture. It was built during epidemic time after the end lockdown of Wuhan, mainly built by the local villagers through a community participatory process with low-tech methods and available materials.

The construction started in April 2020, right after Wuhan ended lockdown on 9 April. Since this village is only two hours’ drive from Wuhan, even after the lockdown it was difficult to recover in a short time. Few people can be found from outside for construction during that special time, the same for the transportation of construction materials. Therefore, the bridge was mainly built by the local villagers with low-tech methods and basic available materials, for example, the wood as the main materials for the cover of bridge was collected around the village. Slim and short pieces of recycled wood fabricated the shells of the bridge pavilion, which is a result for easy handcraft. The wood-fabricated volume is easily immersed in the layered forest along the valley, coating with the changing colors in different seasons.
