The Schlosshouse: Schlosshotel’s new villa duplex in Switzerland

The design of the Zermatt project’s facades and interiors are the work of Studio aledolci&co with Concreta involved as an interior contractor

by Georgina Johnston 06 May 2021

The Schlosshouse a new duplex villa connected to the hotel services such as the lounge, the SchlossSpa - CBDSpa, which is Switzerland’s first cannabidiol spa, and the Schlossport.

High-performance materials were carefully selected for the exterior to both combat the local climate whilst simultaneously maintaining the architectural dialogue with the main hotel building.

The flexible distribution of interior space meant it can adapt to the individual customers’ needs; one apartment per floor consisting of the living room, kitchen and three bedrooms that can be used by large families or groups of friends, kitchen and two bedrooms or single bedrooms.

The moodboard interiors, as required by the clients, is far from the typical alpine folklore that is very common in the nearby hotels. Outdoor spaces, balconies and loggias are important, be it to dry the equipment or just for a moment to take in the views; for this reason, part of the design of the facade is made up of wooden screens among the balconies to guarantee greater privacy.

The connection with the hotel distribution happens via the lift, which leads to the new SchlossSpa - CBDSpa and to the Schlosssport. There is also access through a Winter Garten connecting lounge and reception, hosting an area of relaxed recreation where this space features a palette of bright colours.

The new spa is an elegant space for comfort and privacy in a generous 350 sq m area. On the lower floor of the building there is also a new fitness area and a room reserved for training and yoga.

The project had to optimise the distribution of available space; underground levels had greater potential to utilise empty areas due to the absence of window openings, however this called for a focus on the theme of lighting. The cavity that partially opens on one side of the volume is an interesting design starting point.

Soon, the cavity became a key point of the project. The main relaxation area overlooks it and can be perceived from the entrance, through a filter of glass and wood walls. The Finnish sauna and the ice room also overlook the cavity, which acts as a vestibule for the exit to the outside.

It is important to differentiate the type of lighting in the underground floors and here the direct light is combined with the indirect one. Indirect light diffuses closer to the natural one within the project. The main choice of this project was, in fact, to connote all the wings illuminated in an indirect or natural way with wallpaper graphics.

The chosen graphics represent a submerged way and for shapes, sizes, colours and directionality of the drawings, they immediately appeared to be a fundamental element of the project. In addition to the cavity, they can also be found in the reaction paths, in the emotional showers, as a backsplash in the herbal tea room and in the treatment rooms.
