Loft Buro’s designer couple create bespoke abode in Kyiv

A smelting pot of interior design influences from Japan, Italy, Ukraine and more, all coexisting under the same roof in Ukraine

by Georgina Johnston 20 May 2021

Designed by, and belonging to, the architects of the studio Loft Buro, Oleg Volosovsky and Elena Logvynets, built their family home imagining it as a collection of cultures, colours and materials from their travels and memories of Scythians' times.

The structure had been previously used for commercial activities, featuring exposed systems, metal ceilings, concrete and brick structures and double heights. Past renovations contributed to its strong industrial appeal, and within this the new owners created a private refuge.

Wrapped by white plastered brick walls and illuminated from large windows with anthracite finishes, the first level embraces the kitchen separated with glass walls, dining room and the living area that extends on the upper mezzanine, as well as a laundry and the daughter's room. On the second floor, the living room expands into a workspace and then into the bedroom, with a walk-in closet and bathroom, designed according to the same concept.

The home features design furniture and leather finishes, wooden floors with mosaic alternating stone, a majolica traditional Ukrainian fireplace. Solid wood benches contrast with the enveloping shell and its technical dimension and function and spotlights and projectors and water channels hang from the ceiling, while the electricity pipes branch off on the wall, with the switch boxes deliberately left visible.
