CHINA ONDO Studio create Japanese bakery

Hidden in the Nanjing community area, RE x SUGAR is designed to provide customers with a sweet shopping experience

by Georgina Johnston 22 November 2021

The overall colour of the store is bright, relaxed, clean, comfortable and warm and the overall face of the bakery shop is transparent, with clear windows to maximise direct sunlight. The door is 2.8 metres high and one and a half metres wide and the circular window within the door, together with the sided square windows, supplies views from all sides. The spacious and bright folding windows naturally connect the indoor with the outdoor space.

One metre wide window sills on the inner and outer sides provide customers with an area to rest and sit. While the inside of the other window, sits a tiered counter displaying the latest bakery products for external viewing to those passing by.

Three stone seats and an L-shaped lounge on wooden boards and permeable stones flooring shorten the distance between the store and the neighbourhoods, providing customers with a variety of leisure space.

Bread is regarded as an independent commodity, like jewelry, cups, and hats, which are carefully placed on a double-layer central counter and in two storage cabinets.

Around the central bread booth, bar counters and guest tables were designed in the other three positions; the three groups of guest tables set up in front of the transparent glass connecting the baking room allow customers to watch the production process of the baker while tasting the fresh bread.

Wood-coloured materials and casual texture decorations create a warm atmosphere with the production of tasty bread.
