RMJM RED design Ningbo International Trade and Exhibition Centre

The development consists of four high-rise commercial towers, a conference centre and retail facilities integrated into the development

by Connor Gill 10 January 2022 Urban design

This project makes up the final complex in the extensive Ningbo International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The design, inspired by the project’s significance in the Zhejiang province, refers to a blossoming and bearing of fruit for the development of the precinct.

Motif patterns, inspired by nature and growth, are integrated into feature screens, wall treatments, and roof canopies. The proposed masterplan was driven by the contextual urban planning structure. It integrates harmoniously with the existing area and enhances the urban environment by creating civic spaces in the heart of the development, and a connecting semi-public network above ground.

Communal and retail spaces at the lower levels of the development are articulated by landscape terracing, stairs, and elevators that facilitate activation of the street level. The ground level experience is enriched by dynamic landscape features that integrate ‘green’ areas, seating, and water features. Upper-level building volumes and bridges form the feature platform that unifies the towers. This platform is lifted above the plaza level and binds the podium facilities together, creating gateways and inviting pedestrians into the space.

The façade enhances the urban atmosphere with a cohesive appearance. The colour palette is understated with contrasting tones and textures between volumes. Certain volumes are treated with a dynamic pattern while others are more muted and rhythmic. The monochromatic theme is accented by warm features, such as bronze-tinted glass, perforated champagne coloured panelling and bronze mesh.

The project intends to integrate retail and F&B spaces while offering a variety of office spaces at the podium levels and in the towers.
