Modern European print inspires interiors at Stonehill Taylor's South Carolina hotel

Inspiration for the design for the 197-room AC Hotel in Greenville is drawn from the site’s history, as well as the surrounding art and theatre district neighbourhood, natural environment and the area's textile mills

by Connor Gill 12 January 2022

The reception area seats a long, minimal stone and glass desk, backed by a contemporary marquetry wall, inspired by a printing press at the Greenville News, and features a beautiful deconstructed pattern. Acrylic lightboxes are layered against the back wall.

Seating is arranged opposite the desk and work by local artists hangs on the wall in a small library. Overhead is a modern European interpretation of rustic wood beams, referencing those found in an archaic warehouse or printing factory.

Passing through the lobby, a breakfast area morphs into a lounge and bar area in the evening. In this space, a striking acrylic light fixture feature hangs overhead that is inspired by fabric from the textile mills. The carpeting takes the form of area rugs that refer to large-scale printing patterns in ink blue shades. A feature wall at the back is tiled in ink blue, while seating and communal dining tables fill the room.

Dividing the reception area from the bar and restaurant is a tinted glass wall that incorporates the idea of local warehouse-inspired windows, as well as glass shelving that forms the back bar. The bar is awash in warm hues, copper tones, and mixed metals. Around the area is a decorative drape of metal mesh material that brings a sense of human scale to the space, boasting 19ft tall ceilings. Wooden flooring lines the bar and restaurant area, taking inspiration from antique print house flooring. Overhead, blue acoustical panels channel an ink-inspired aesthetic across the ceiling.

On the first floor, connected to the public terrace, is a flex space, made to induce relaxation and retain an industrial appearance. On the ceiling is a large, graphic wall covering in shades of grey and black.

On the second floor by the elevator bank is a meeting room, in a neutral palette that flows through the storey, with over-scaled print patterns on the carpet and accented by warm woods and metals. A vinyl wall covering in this space is also print house-influenced. This floor is where the VIP suite is located; equipped with a full kitchen and entertainment options. The neutral colour palette is paired with a black and white rug.

The four standard suites feature bedrooms with prints displayed on a ledge above a leather headboard with built-in lighting. The suites also include a kitchenette and dining area. The bridal suite, in particular, has a large central kitchen table in anticipation of wedding preparations.
