Vanke Starry Metropolis' starlight design in China

At the centre of Mind Design’s 900 sq m Lanzhou project is a giant art installation which connects with the water underneath and a mirror above

by Connor Gill 17 January 2022

The square and circular shapes of the installation mutually supplement each other, with a dynamic and static overlap incorporated into the art piece that boasts an appealing oriental aesthetic. Mind Design echoed the theme of starlight within the art installation and non-opaque stone with spots. From the lobby, the space is constantly changing; the installation is being used to show that the starry sky is constantly expanding.

The building, landscape and interior were integrated into an inseparable whole to act as ‘starlight’, helping the bright night sky light up Xigu. The closed façade is intended to teach that the region of Xigu is a place that people can keep away from the hustle and bustle of a more urban environment.

At the centre of the space, the sand table area connects the lobby, model room, and gallery, along with the social fields in the booths, at the water bar, and the consultation area. The fluid interior remains open; people are able to complete their self-declaration of the value of life, intended by the 'Time Capsule,' in a suddenly bright environment. Art flows through the interior, twisting and turning through the space.

As a northern city, Lanzhou has a tough winter. On the one hand, the treatment of a warm tone is a response to the geographical culture, and on the other hand, it can produce a warm and bright psychological effect, driving away the chill atmosphere in autumn and winter here.

Development team, Mind Design

The designers presented an area of super-scale sunken booths for families and other large groups. A light belt illuminates the edge of the booths, creating a floating effect and a vague feeling of uncertainty, working with the building’s ceiling mirror.

Pale brown, in different colour gradients, constitutes the main tone of the social space. Fibre-optic lights pass through the ceiling and produce flares, to be interpreted as starlight.

The translucent stone wall is made to appear with the rough and primitive beauty after a long weathering, taking inspiration from the history of northwest China. The colours of the space are clean and pure; both the interior and exterior are harmonised through the simple colour palette. The designers built a VIP area with the hope of engulfing the guests in tranquillity.

Taking "the Wizard of Oz" as the theme of the children's area, the designers have built a green dreamland through space design and colour collocation. In the space, the design of optical fibre and spherical light can eliminate the sense of oppression caused by the storey height, and echo the theme of "starlight" to increase interest.
