Paulo Merlini Architects wins competition for rehabilitation of former Portuguese Lactogal factory

The competition, ran by the real estate investment company, Casto Group, included proposals from six national architecture firms and aimed to find the best architectural solution for the adaptation of existing buildings

by Hannah Holt 18 April 2022 Corporate Offices

The scheme focuses on one of the first industrial units of the company Lactogal, construction having started in 1964 and been completed in 1967. The factory unit was originally used for the production and storage of milk.

It will be adapted into a new business centre called SPARK - Smart Park Matosinhos. The name, SPARK Matosinhos, reflects the concept of the development: an intelligent building focused on the people who occupy it, and one that is connected to the planet.

The design is integrated into a total area of approximately 18,000 sq m. Rehabilitation, technology, community, connection and nature are the key pillars within the project.

The connection between interior office spaces and exterior green areas will be maintained in order to provide a meeting point between people, ideas, business, architecture, and nature.
