Derin Kinacigil and Juan Franco win Icelandic international design competition

The competition, hosted by Bee Breeders in collaboration with Vogafjós Farm Resort, tasked participants to design a greenhouse concept restaurant

by Hannah Holt 16 May 2022

With fresh, locally grown foods scarce in Iceland, particularly during the winter months, this competition called for submissions to design a greenhouse that would also function as a dine-in restaurant. Such a greenhouse would allow Vogafjós Farm to grow salad vegetables, fruits, and berries that could then be served, offering the guests an immersive experience as well as locally-produced food.

The brief sought sustainable designs to accommodate 100 guests which included standard amenities: an appropriately-sized kitchen, storage facilities, and toilets. The owners expressed interest in developing a restaurant where customers could witness first-hand the processes of production, as well as including larger programs such as a multipurpose hall to be used for events like film showings and yoga classes.

Bee Breeders worked with an outstanding regional and international jury panel for this event comprising: David Ceaser, Pálmar Kristmundsson, Katie MacDonald, Oscar Rodriguez, Christina Seilern and Valdis Steinarsdottir.

Derin Kinacigil and Juan Franco from the UK took first prize for their Hill Farm project. Hill Farm’s logical layout and thoughtful green design elements made it a clear jury favourite, taking inspiration from the site’s sloping volcanic landscape and using site-specific materials. It was also their Green Award winner.

Second prize was awarded to Hudson Parris and Matthew Cox from the United States. Their Vogafjos project expands upon typical greenhouse elements to produce a new hybrid of indoor farming and eating.

Third prize winners Simone Miraglia and Celeste Mangone from Italy used local materials for their How We Do/What We Do project, with a linear plan and practical construction method.

The client-chosen Vogafjós Farm Resort Favourite Award went to Michael Leckie, Peter M. Wenger, Jason Hall and Melody Chen from Canadian firm Leckie Studio Architecture + Design, and the ARCHHIVE BOOKS Student Award went to Stanislav Milchev and Vasil Delev students from University of Architecture, Civil Eng. and Geodesy, Bulgaria.
