SANAA commissioned to design University of Luxembourg campus building

Entirely funded by André Losch Fondation, the new auditorium will be transferred to the state after its completion and then made available to the University of Luxembourg, where it will be used for teaching purposes and to organise scientific and cultural events

by Hannah Holt 24 May 2022

SANAA were awarded the project’s lead following their win of a design competition, hosted by the André Losch Fondation in 2020. Three groups of architects participated:  OMA / Rem Koolhaas from the Netherlands, SANAA / Kazuyo Segima from Japan, and BIG / Bjarke Ingels from Denmark. SANAA’s design for the auditorium was chosen for its fluid forms, simplicity and permeability.

‘The Cloud’ will occupy a privileged location on Boulevard J.F. Kennedy and will serve as a reference point for the urban development of Kirchberg campus. The building will have a total surface area of approximately 4,000 sq m. It will include classrooms, seminar rooms, practical training rooms, two auditoriums (with 40 seats each) and a large conference room for 450 people. It will also have several multifunctional rooms, offices and catering facilities.

The project will be implemented in collaboration with the Luxembourg architectural firm Fabeck Architectes and is due to be delivered by 2025.
