Environment and amenities coexist at the Eslite Spectrum bookstore in Taiwan

Taiwanese architecture firm Chain10, introduces architecture as a supporting player to the natural environment

by Hannah Holt 22 June 2022 Fixtures

The store is located near Software Science Park, an industrial factory and office centre, whose creation led to a surge of population and therefore, a stunt in the migration of natural wildlife. Chain10 Founder and Principal Keng-Fu Lo used this as a starting point for the nearby Eslite Spectrum with the goal of using newly created space to foster the environment rather than deter it.

To accommodate Taiwan’s humid climate, the building was coated with Stö paint that prevents water molecules from penetrating its surface while still allowing it to be breathable.

Lo also incorporated modular materials to reduce future carbon emissions to ensure the structure’s sustainability.

Inside, an airy staircase brings in abundant natural light thanks to slats that line the walls. The staircase runs through an outdoor platform on each floor to encourage guests to engage with each other, and to provide a wide step on which guests can stop and read. The books are displayed across multiple floors in a large U-shape.

The property also includes a stage for performances, a calming exterior water feature, and an outdoor dining area.
