Bridges

BAU’s Yuandang Bridge dynamically unites Jiangsu Province and Shanghai

Stretching over the Yuandang Lake, the bridge flows with a design resembling ribbons and the ripple of water

by Séan Thurgood 01 August 2022

Brearley Architects + Urbanists (BAU) designed the bridge for the Construction Bureau of Fen Lake High-tech Industrial Development Zone. It measures 586m long and was completed in 2020.

The bridge brings Jiangsu Province and Shanghai together creating new connections. As you cross the Yuandang Lake, the wealth of trees and shrubs gives the appearance of a floating garden.

The greenery is further enhanced by the vegetation band, one third of the bridge dedicated to nature. The other two bands are the cycling path and the walking path which are both excellent choices for taking in the beautiful scenery of the lake.

In addition, the bridge’s pavilion takes inspiration from local sculptural traditions with a playground that utilises a porous wall. The structure becomes both an impressive sculpture as well as a great space for children.
