Originally designed and constructed in 1955 by Icelandic modernist architect Gunnlaugur Halldórsson, the residence Ægisíða 44 was considered especially iconic.
The extension named The Trípólí project was finished in 2019 and adds an additional 255 sq m to the property. Originally intended to add just a garage, the completed project has two additional bedrooms, a bathroom and a brand new entryway to the modernist home.
Restoring the façades to its original state, the construction added only a single dividing wall between the gardens and the driveway. The new project wanted to avoid overwhelming the original structure and detracting from what made Halldórsson’s design so strong. The exterior wall of the extension is black in order to highlight the original’s whiteness.
With the design of the single sloped roof, the extension slopes in the opposite direction in order to create a bright space between these two points. This allows sunlight to stream through in three directions, ensuring that the property is warmed by natural light.
