1/2 Coffee & Bar commissioned a new café designed with local culture in mind. They wanted to blend in with the characteristics of the architecture in the area of Xiamen, Fujian, China.
Located in Dadeji Bathing Beach and covering an area of 250 sq m, the new café was completed in November 2021. The design focused on the nature of the island in combination with the brand’s desire for a diverse space.
Utilising the existing 19th-century building, the project adapts to the original form and focuses on bringing the best from the interior. Connecting nature, the design uses steel structures resembling tree trunks in addition to the ficus plant that commonly grows on the island to create a canopy across the ceiling.
By using the naturally occurring plants, this creates shadows which provide shelter from the weather and creates space for ventilation and heat dissipation.
Once night falls, the area shines bright with neon lights that draw the attention of those wandering around at night and draws them in.
