Transforming the simple plywood structure, the design team created an exterior space that visually connects to the Vestry. Tying in the colour schemes from the restaurant’s interiors, the outdoor space is full of deep blue’s woven through the carpets and walls, and copper elements that reflect the materials of the interior bar. Atop each chair are brown, sheepskin covers that have been carried through from the restaurant’s interiors, complementing the modern feel of the space while bringing in natural elements. The pill shaped screens from the interiors are translated in the exterior dining space through window shapes and appliques.
The restaurant’s Asian-inspired cuisine is showcased through elements of Asian designs into the kiosk. The graphic paint lines used are reflective of patterns found within Japanese wood joinery.
A lighting installation on the front façade is inspired by hanging lanterns, with fixtures framed by curved fins that are a nod to the vernacular architecture in Eastern Asia.
The use of plexi-screens, hidden by the wood lattice structure, blocks out the noise of the downtown Manhattan Street location. Equipped for all seasons, the kiosk features materials to keep rain and snow out, and drapery to control the wind from coming into the outdoor space. Curvilinear forms pay tribute to urban creativity through the use of local materials, textures and details.
