MAD Architects design cloudlike centre for culture in Qinhuangdao China

The structure rises high into the sky and gives the illusion of floating

by Séan Thurgood 15 September 2022 Performing Spaces

The “Cloud Center” will be located close to the Beidaihe coastline in northeastern China. The design is intended to appear as a “floating cloud by the sea”, and will offer a multi-purpose public space for Aranya residents and visitors.

Across 2,579 sq m, the building creates the illusion of clouds through the use of a façade of white stained glass and a winding entry road that leads upwards. Using a series of structural overhangs of up to 30m in length, the building appears to float above the central column.

Directly beneath the façade is a pool which reflects the building and the natural clouds above, further enforcing the fantasy. The structure is also surrounded by a sculpted white stone garden with vibrant greenery.

The primary internal space is a multi-purpose room which continues through the swirling ceiling. With ample skylights, natural light illuminates the entire structure which improves energy efficiency.

Through the use of open space, the building can be adapted to meet the needs of any exhibitions, performances or any other functions that are required.
