Montgomery Sisam Architects with Moriyama & Teshima create college campus in Mississauga, Canada

Sheridan College’s Hazel McCallion Campus Phase 2A houses spaces for athletics, food services and recreation spaces

by Séan Thurgood 01 September 2022

The new campus in downtown Mississauga will serve around 6,100 students across a 70,000 sq ft campus. The design focused on improving interpersonal communication and will help bring students and staff together through the use of modern facilities, to counter the effects of isolation seen during  the pandemic.

To create a campus that served everyone, the architects engaged students during the design process to ensure that the campus provided them with everything they needed.

For athletic students a multi-level floating running track encircles the building creating an open access area that connects to nearby yoga, basketball and fitness facilities. The outdoor spaces included open and covered walkways, a patrio, and an outdoor turf field.

A double-height atrium hosts the other campus facilities including a modern lounge, study spaces, club rooms and cafés. The glass clad exterior provides plenty of natural light and views of the campus and surrounding city, and the design also uses a modest fenestration to prevent solar glare.
