aoe create cliffside Wanzhou Yongjiang Reception Centre in Chongqing, China

Located near the Yangtze River the structure is reachable via a landscape elevator

by Séan Thurgood 09 November 2022

The designers wanted to ensure that the structure was integrated with its natural environment without causing any damage to either the area of the 3,357 sq m structure. The resulting structure reinforces the existing cliffside and utilises the natural cave elements of the landscape.

A glass polyhedron makes up the main structure of the building with a roof supported by stone pillars. These pillars create a rich grey space in the project which is excavated in some parts to simulate the shape of natural caves and allow natural light to shine through.

To connect the 30m height difference of the two entrances, the landscape elevator takes the form of a polyhedron and appears as a stone pillar between the cliff and the rest of the structure.

Extending above the structure is an observation tower which protrudes slightly from the cliff body to provide a wider field of vision.
