MASS Lab designs Intertwine Bridge to connect Reykjavík and Kópavogur in Iceland

The waterfront development is designed to make the shoreline accessible to the community

Building a new gateway between communities, the bridge is part of a broader plan to improve their recreational, ecological and tourist activities. The landmark bridge will support environmentally friendly transport options such as buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

The new design will build upon the existing paths on either side of the shore and bring a new topography for public use. Being anchored on both sides creates a connection between the cities, and the intertwining of the paths’ soft curves are tailored to the buses, cyclists and pedestrians that will utilise individual lanes daily. 

Special attention has been given to the flora of the area surrounding the bridge with the addition of local trees including conifer, poplar, larch, and ash berry. The designers also focused on the waterfront elements by incorporating watersports, cultural spots and other methods to improve the community feeling of the area. 

The structure consists of concrete arches to provide more space for boats and water activities. A composite steel-concrete deck has been included in the design to reinforce the arches and reduce the amount of maintenance that the structure requires. In addition, there is a minimal use of support devices and expansion joints as these typically require the most maintenance.  

The bridge is formed similarly to a composite deck, resting on a pair of sinusoidal concrete arches which connect monolithically to socket piles. With the bedrock at about 14-15m, the flexibility of the arches and piles allow for total continuity between the components to create a better performance and reduce overall maintenance costs.

As a safety feature, web net railings stretch the length of the bridge to encourage pedestrians to enjoy the uninterrupted views of the waves and beachfront. Subtle lighting is used throughout to provide safe lighting for the buses and ensure adequate separation from the railings.
