Midtown Manhattan office created in early 20th century tower by Olson Kundig

Located near the Empire State building the project is part of the firm’s ongoing commitment to invest in urban spaces

by Séan Thurgood 14 September 2022

On the 10th floor of a 1923 mid-rise tower, the office provides views of the streetscape to the north and of the several significant pieces of architecture to the south.

The focal point of the office is a 144 sq ft table designed by Tom Kundig, inspired by memories of gathering around the table with his teacher and fellow students. Creating a spirit of sharing and nurturing fresh ideas is the core of the memory and one that Kundig hopes will continue in the new office space.

The table is constructed from raw timber offcuts and features an integrated turntable and record collection. Divided into quarters and mounted upon wheels, the table can be adjusted to different configurations to suit the needs of the office.

Opening a New York office space allows us to share a bit of the Pacific Rim and our ‘unstable edge’ mentality with the East Coast, forging new relationships and opportunities for collaboration. That influence goes both ways, of course—shared cultural events and firm culture creates a river that flows between the two cities, exchanging ideas and energy back and forth.

Alan Maskin, Principal and Design Lead, Olson Kundig

Throughout the office will be a series of curated artworks inspired by the firm’s tradition of making art part of everyday life. Dedicated wall space will host paintings and other art while the runways between the kitchen and workstations will feature free-standing pieces and sculptures.
