Kandinsky inspired hotel designed by Holloway Li in Munich, Germany

Wunderlocke is a low impact aparthotel focused on renewal through connection to nature

by Séan Thurgood 20 September 2022

In the industrial Obersendling district of Munich, the 360-studio aparthotel occupies the ex-Siemens office building. The intention of the designers was to seek an alternative to the material intensive approach to retrofitting and instead use the exposed concrete frame layered with carefully curated ‘dressing.’

This design explores the dynamics between fixed concrete elements and the formless boundaries of the common areas, allowing for future adaptation. The original 1960s terrazzo staircase has been restored with new stainless steel fixtures and a handrail that brings it up to modern code.

Within the building is a microcosm of the city: a combination of living, working and leisure spaces.

Using the aesthetic of artist Vasily Kandinsky who explored a closer relationship to nature through abstraction, he believed in connecting through the ‘Innerer Klang’ or inner voice of things to reveal the natural essence of objects and materials.

Featuring timber, terrazzo and raffia throughout helps balance against the concrete and bring a softness to the space. This is further enhanced by the earthy tones and botanical greens of the colour scheme which is punctuated by pops of colour in the furniture and upholstery.

By following these ideas, the designers strip back superfluous ornament and use the quasi-ruin of the area’s industrial past to showcase how renewal could be cultivated. Through partnerships with local firms, Holloway Li responsibly sourced furniture and lighting which offset 15 tonnes of CO2.
