Migdal Arquitectos create luxury Mayan inspired floating resort in Quintana Roo, Mexico

The 10-hectare property sits within a mangrove swamp area in the Mexican Caribbean

by Séan Thurgood 22 September 2022

Atop three platforms at only 4m above sea level, the area feels like floating above the water while being surrounded by nature. Divided into four platformed zones: a public area, a rest area, a recreational area, and the beach, each are connected through a main access which allows visitors to traverse between them with ease.

Within the public area is a plaza, reception, meeting room, spa, gym, yoga, and treatment rooms. The spa highlights the Mayan belief of connection between humans and the universe. Water below and sky above are exhibited and create a cenote-like experience through the use of ceiling cut outs that ask guests to gaze up. The design uses simple, natural materials throughout which highlight a transition from earth to universe.

Paying homage to Mayan traditional design, the main materials used throughout are stone, wood and chukum style stucco. Towards the east, looking out at the sea, the façade features a lattice designed in wood and prefabricated concrete which provides a dimmer of the morning sun rays while giving the rooms more privacy.

The complex features diverse systems which mitigate its environmental impact and improve the sustainability of the structure. A wastewater treatment plant on site makes use of the water by treating it and using it in the irrigation of the green roofs and gardens while also filtering the water for general use.

LED lighting is used throughout, alongside efficient air conditioning equipment and dehumidifiers. This helps the project create an immersive natural experience and an escape focused on wellness.
