Recycled art space springs up in record time

“A fresh and unique project that resulted from innovative thinking,” James Postell, Judge.

Project: Martin Goya X PIG

Award: Experiential Design, Silver, 2022

Location: Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

Design Practice: PIG DESIGN

Client: Martin Goya

This independent art space set in the Xiangshan Art Commune, close to the China Academy of Art campus in Hangzhou, is dedicated to supporting local young artists and incorporates multiple functions including a gallery, tea room and salon. It holds regular art events to offer networking opportunities, and provides young artists with a free platform, with the profits from the on-site cafe supporting its operation.
The design team retained the basic framework of the existing building which stood neglected and unused, transforming the space in just one month to meet time and budget constraints. With an emphasis on sustainability, leftover building materials were transformed into regenerated materials that are low-cost and easy to maintain.
The building is wrapped in emerald green wear-resistant and waterproof canvas, fixed in place with a staple gun. The ceiling is painted in the same colour while the floor is paved with black gravel and stone slabs, which blur the boundary between the interior and outside.

Design highlights

Recycled metal rods form a triangular installation, cantilevering out at assorted lengths to resemble metallic twigs around the entrance. The curved bar is topped in stainless steel and in place of conventional arm rests and chair legs, the green upholstered furniture appears to sprout gold hands and feet.
